The Heir of Scandal

A cryptic pregnancy that threatens to tear a family legacy apart

The Heir of Scandal

by Didje C. Anda

In the shadow of her aristocratic family’s esteemed reputation, a youthful Margaret makes a drastic choice to safeguard their honour—and her own. In the absence of her husband David, a respected physician serving the British army as a colonel, Margaret’s clandestine affair with Steve leads to an unexpected pregnancy. Faced with scandal, she entrusts the child to her twin sister, Jane, keeping the baby’s paternity a mystery.

After Margaret vanishes without a trace, her secret lies dormant until Steve’s sudden reappearance thirteen years later, stirring questions about young Henry’s lineage. With suspicions mounting, the intricate web of lies woven by Margaret, Jane, and their mother Kathryn threatens to unravel.

Amidst the backdrop of aristocratic intrigue involving the Watson, McCullough, and Dewitt families, passions flare and secrets emerge. As ambitions and desires clash, the question remains: Will the family’s dark secrets lead to their undoing, or can they navigate the treacherous waters of society’s expectations?

In a world where honour and deception walk hand in hand, the unraveling of one mystery could be the downfall of an entire legacy.

He thought she was Helena Partridge, the woman he had known thirteen years ago. Helena was younger and did not have the same dress style, nor even the same haircut, but her features were the same, as was the colour of her eyes.

If Maggie had possessed any sense, she would have fled immediately. However, she decided that she could be giddy for just one evening, convinced that she would not let things go any further than this bar flirtation.
Nevertheless, at three in the morning, Maggie was still sitting at the bar, even though she was now on her second glass of brandy. In her state of inebriation, she did not even notice that Steve had been gone for some time.

The ring had cost a small fortune, particularly for someone like him who tried to save all the pennies he could. But Helena was worth it! In the shower, he replayed their most recent embraces. He delighted in licking the butterfly poised on her upper thigh that never flew away. Helena, however, had admitted that she saw it as a blemish and that she had looked into laser removal. But the dermatologist had warned that her skin would be scarred in that area. She had therefore given up on the idea.

David’s absence weighed on her, and she was starting to feel it. This was understandable: he had been gone for ten long months. Maggie yearned for David to embrace her tightly, even though she refused to show it or to complain when he called her. She did not want this to affect his mission and service record. Without venturing into confidential topics, David would mention the difficulties of his role as he explained how to manage the extreme weather fluctuations.

This child, whom she still could not bring herself to address by name, had left a lasting wound on her heart, one that time could not heal – quite the opposite, in fact. The more he grew, the more he resembled Steve, and the more he reminded her of her mistake. A dishonour that would never fade. This child had forever closed the door of her heart to all tenderness, to the affection of her family. Would her pain never go away?
